Pirate Party To Run In Federal Byelection

Stephen Harper finally announced the next round of federal by-elections. Two of the open seats are in Manitoba.

They are: Winnipeg North which was held by New Democrat Judy Wasylycia-Leis and Dauphin-Swan River-Marquette which was held by Inky Mark.

I will detail the race later on but of interest is the fact that the Pirate Party is running their first candidate outside of Europe. The candidate is Mikkel Paulson.

The platform of the party is:

* Copyright reform
* Reform of the patents system
* Better respect for privacy
* Net neutrality
* Open government
* Digital sovereignty

By the way, I stole that from their website as well as their logo atop.

When I first heard the name, I thought the Pirate Party was some sort of joke akin to the Rhino Party.

However, the platform that they are running on puts them well ahead of the curve in relation to the mainstream parties. It would be great to see a little more public debate on issues like copyright, privacy, net neutrality which are becoming increasingly relevant. In other words, it would be ideal if Canada's position on those issues was deliberate and thoughtful instead of being made by default, based on whoever has the best lobbyists.

I will look more closely at their platform.

I am a bit concerned that some people don't want any copyright at all.
